Overview of the Whippet
| The Whippet is graceful, intelligent, eager to please, exceptionally
affectionate, and generally healthy. Whippets are particularly well
adapted for human companionship and make excellent house dogs and
devoted friends. They are natural athletes, enjoying regular exercise
and excelling at a variety of field events, including lure coursing and
racing. |

At the same time, the adults are quiet and relaxed at home, although
puppies can be rambunctious for their first year of life. Given proper
nutrition, exercise, regular vaccinations and veterinary care, most
Whippets live for 12 to 15 years, some longer. They do not adjust well
to kennel life and do best when living as house dogs. A fenced area for
exercise and play is very important, and being leashed otherwise when
outdoors is recommended, as their chase instinct is strong. |

It is important to remember that Whippets are very sensitive dogs and
will not respond well to physical punishment or to loud, angry or
stressful voices. In fact, it will be worse than no training at all.
They are very capable of being taught the basic home commands such as
sit, down, stay, etc |
